Summer Sensory Series

I love a good sensory activity and by "good' I mean an activity that activates a child's senses AND their imagination, communication skills (receptive & expressive) and depending on their age, ability to help construct and clean up the activity.

Here are a couple of my favorite ideas to have fun this summer.

Mini water bottles and non-perishable food items make great shakers!

We dried out 2 mini water bottles- one for me and one for baby girl.  Then we added a little rice to each bag and 10-15 drops of food coloring.

We zipped the bags and let our little one pat and shake the bag to mix some of the color (completely adult-supervised).

I finished mixing the colors for her and we used a funnel to put a little of each color in the empty water bottle.

Shakers & music Makers

Mama Observations:

  • It took a couple of opportunities for baby girl to really begin shaking this as a maraca.
  • The mini water bottle is a great size for her 11 month old hands.
  • Depending on your child, you may want to put some hot glue underneath the cap before sealing it shut. Then clean up any excess so they can't get to it.

Other "shakers"

  • Dried beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Dried pasta (with or without dying them)
  • Cheerios
  • Mini bells
  • Mini beads

Water Play can be indoor or outdoor depending on your comfort level, materials available, child's age and of course, weather.

Indoor water play can even happen in the bathtub and this format opens the door for different materials to be used.

Messy, safe, fun, edible...so much to explore. These are some of my favorites for this category and by no means, an exhaustive list...there are so many possibilities!

Cause & Effect

I love this section because there are so many possibilities AND so many safe options for kid of different ages.

When our little one was 6 months old, I used an empty mini water bottle and filled it with cheerios. This was a good size for her hands to hold and shake.
